why do i feel bad for laughing
so I haven’t been on tumblr for the past hour and a half because I wanted to focus on my paper and i come back and have 500 new notes and i’m wondering which little fucker reblogged my thing and sparked this whole cascade

this episode is going to KILL ME
and i need to rant about some science things okay?
i’m in this class about reproductive health from an evolutionary perspective and i had to do some reading about the placenta and at first i was like blergh but it was actually really cool? hear me out
one of the functions of the placenta is it acts as a barrier between the mom’s and the fetus’s circulatory systems. different species have different placentas that have a different number of layers. for example, humans have hemochorial placenta, which is three layers. other species have more layers, like six.
what does this mean? well, the placenta helps prevent the mom’s body from attacking the fetus like it would other foreign material (like a transfered organ or a skin graft). and it turns out that the thicker the placenta (the more layers), the greater genetic variation the fetus can have from the mother.
this is partially why horses can have little mule babies with donkeys, cuz horses have placenta with 6 layers. but more that that: species with a greater placenta barrier tend to undergo speciation - splitting into different species - more (aka adaptive radiation!) What does that mean for humans? well, humans only have like 3 layers so instead we mostly underwent anagenesis. anagenesis means we basically instead of speciation we got more complicated.
so why did we have a thinner placental barrier if it meant less fantastic bipeds?? well, a thinner barrier allows more oxygen to transfer between mom and fetus, which helps brain development. so, thank you hemochorial placenta! turns out you do more than get eaten haha
